What is Encaustic Art

Encaustic is an ancient form of painting using a mixture of wax and resin. Each layer of the painting is heated to fuse it to the previous layer- ‘Encaustic' literally translates as ‘burning in’.
The wax can be mixed with pigments, oil paints, mixed media objects- photographs, beautiful papers, found or antique objects, rust..the options are limitless.
I became fascinated with encaustic art after seeing the rich textures and depth of imagery created with layers of translucent wax, that cannot be duplicated with any other medium.
